Ashwagandha is an adaptogen — meaning it helps the body regulate stress rather than simply sedating or stimulating. It works primarily through the adrenal system, nervous system, and immune modulation pathways.
It’s one of my favorite herbs for dogs that are wired-tired, chronically stressed, anxious, or immune depleted.

TCM Perspective
Ashwagandha is considered warming and tonifying.
Good for:
-
Cold, weak, depleted dogs
-
Low energy + anxiety combo
-
Muscle wasting
Use caution in:
-
Very hot, red, inflamed dogs
-
Dogs with excessive heat signs (panting, red ears, inflamed skin)
If a dog is flaring with red ears + hot paws + histamine chaos, I usually stabilize first before adding a warming adaptogen.
Precautions & Contraindications
Avoid or Use Caution If Dog Has:
-
Hyperthyroidism
-
Pregnancy
-
Severe liver disease
-
On strong sedatives (monitor)
-
On thyroid medication (monitor levels)
Possible Side Effects
-
Loose stool at high doses
-
Mild sedation initially
-
Increased energy in some dogs
-
Rare GI upset
How Long to Use?
-

-
Chronic conditions: can be used long-term with periodic breaks
-
I often cycle: 6–8 weeks on, 1–2 weeks off
