Benefits of Eggshell for Dogs
Provides Bioavailable Calcium
Supports:
-
Strong bones & teeth
-
Proper muscle contraction
-
Nerve signaling
-
Heart rhythm
Balances Boneless Diets
If feeding boneless meat, eggshell helps correct the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio (ideal range ~1.2–1.4:1).
Supports Growth (when properly calculated)
Especially important for:
-
Puppies
-
Pregnant or nursing dogs
Gentle on the Gut
Often easier to digest than raw bone for sensitive dogs.
Dose Chart (General Guideline)
1 level teaspoon finely ground eggshell powder ≈ 1,800–2,000 mg calcium
Standard Ratio for Boneless Meat
-
½ teaspoon eggshell powder per 1 lb (454 g) boneless meat
This provides approximately 900–1,000 mg calcium per pound of meat.
Daily Calcium Estimate by Dog Weight
(For dogs eating boneless homemade/raw diet)
| Dog Weight | Approx. Eggshell Per Day |
|---|---|
| 10 lbs | 1/8 tsp |
| 20 lbs | 1/4 tsp |
| 30 lbs | 1/3 tsp |
| 40 lbs | 1/2 tsp |
| 50 lbs | 1/2–3/4 tsp |
| 60 lbs | 3/4 tsp |
| 70 lbs | 3/4–1 tsp |
| 80 lbs | 1 tsp |
| 90 lbs | 1–1¼ tsp |
| 100 lbs | 1¼ tsp |
These amounts assume a fully boneless diet at ~2–2.5% body weight feeding. Adjust if feeding bone.
Precautions
Do NOT use if:
-
Feeding full raw meaty bones regularly
-
Feeding a complete & balanced commercial diet
-
Dog has hypercalcemia
-
History of calcium oxalate bladder stones
Be Careful With:
-
Large breed puppies (calcium excess can cause skeletal issues)
-
Dogs with kidney disease
-
Dogs prone to constipation
Important
Eggshell provides calcium only — it does NOT provide:
-
Phosphorus
-
Magnesium
-
Trace minerals
-
Collagen
If replacing bone long-term, other mineral sources may need to be considered.
